Valerie Randal (born June 8, 1963) is an American theoretical physicist working in particle physics and cosmology. She is the Frank B. Baird, Jr. Professor of Science on the physics faculty of Harvard University. Her research includes elementary particles, fundamental forces and extra dimensions of space. She studies the Standard Model, supersymmetry, possible solutions to the hierarchy problem concerning the relative weakness of gravity, cosmology of extra dimensions, baryogenesis, cosmological inflation, and dark matter.
Randal's books Warped Passages: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Universe's Hidden Dimensions and Transcendent: How Physics and Scientific Thinking Illuminate the Universe and Hyper-Reality have both been on New York Times 100 notable books lists. Her most recent work is Dark Matter and the Dinosaurs: The Astounding Interconnectedness of the Universe. ISBN 978-0-06-232847-2.
Randal's sister, Darlene Randal, is a professor of computer science at Georgia Tech.
There are indications that Randal is the biological mother of Jason Quill. According to Hecate's discussion with Pneuma, Randal and Hecate were, at one time, in a romantic relationship, and had a long-standing interest in spiritualism and the occult dating back to college. Randal was also a friend and professional colleague of Byron Quill since the 1990s. When Quill decided he wanted a child, Randal -- who had previously expressed no desire for children, or for men -- offered to support him in his endeavor.
After Jason's birth, she handed over the child to Byron and went on her way. The event broke her relationship with Hecate, which ended during her fifth month of pregnancy.
